Exploring the Great Outdoors: What is Overlanding and How to Get Started

If you spend time on social media, around Jeeps, Trucks, and 4X4s, or you've walked into an REI recently - you have probably heard the word Overlanding.

What even is it?

If you're looking for a new and exciting way to explore the great outdoors, you may want to consider Overlanding. Overlanding basically involves driving off-road vehicles to remote destinations, often for extended periods of time (off the grid). These destinations are exactly on "paved" roads, which is where the fun comes in.

This activity has become increasingly popular in recent years, attracting adventurers of all ages who want to experience the beauty and challenge of off-road travel.

We're going to explore what Overlanding is, basic history, and what it takes to get started.

What is Overlanding?

Overlanding is essentially self-reliant travel to remote destinations using off-road vehicles, such as SUVs, trucks, and 4x4s. It's a form of adventure travel that requires drivers to be self-sufficient, as they'll need to bring everything they need with them, including food, water, fuel, and camping gear.

Overlanders typically travel long distances, exploring remote areas and experiencing the natural world in a way that's difficult to replicate in other types of travel. This could include driving through deserts, over mountains, and through forests, and camping in remote locations.
Overlanding can be done as a solo activity or in a group, and it's a great way to meet like-minded individuals who share your love of adventure and the outdoors.

The History of Overlanding

Overlanding has a long and storied history, dating back to the days of the Silk Road and the ancient trade routes of the Middle East. Nomadic tribes used pack animals to travel long distances across deserts and mountains, carrying goods and supplies with them. Back then, it was not a "Trendy Hobby" like it is now.

In the early 20th century, overlanding became more popular as adventurers and explorers began to use vehicles to travel long distances across remote areas. These early pioneers were often motivated by a desire to explore and discover new places, and they used vehicles like Land Rovers and Jeeps to navigate challenging terrain.

Today, overlanding is more popular than ever, with a growing number of enthusiasts around the world who are eager to explore the beauty and challenges of off-road travel.

Getting Started with Overlanding

If you're interested in trying overlanding for yourself, there are a few things you'll need to consider before hitting the road.
First, you'll need to choose the right vehicle. While many different types of vehicles can be used for overlanding, it's important to choose one that's reliable, sturdy, and equipped for off-road travel. This might include SUVs, pickup trucks, or even modified vans. (We've helped our customers build some pretty impressive rigs)

You'll also need to invest in the right gear and equipment. This might include camping gear like tents, sleeping bags, and cooking equipment, as well as recovery gear like winches and traction boards.
In addition, you'll need to plan your route and make sure you have everything you need to stay safe and comfortable on the road. This could include maps, GPS devices, and emergency supplies like first aid kits and extra food and water.

Overlanding can be a challenging and rewarding experience, but it's important to be prepared and take safety seriously. Always research your destination and make sure you have the right equipment and supplies before heading out on the road.

Overlanding is a thrilling and exciting way to explore the great outdoors, offering a unique and challenging adventure that's difficult to replicate in other forms of travel. With the right vehicle, gear, and preparation, overlanding can be a safe and enjoyable way to experience the beauty and wonder of remote destinations around the world.
